Our New Zealand Vacation

What a beautiful country!

For our spring break in March this year we went to New Zealand for 9 days.  We had a nice relaxing vacation.  The weather was beautiful-we enjoyed the fresh air so much!  We began our vacation in Christ Church. In the picture above, we drove to a small french town called Akaroa for our first full day of vacation.  It was such a peaceful place.  We took a boat ride around the harbour and got to see dolphins swimming along side the boat.  One of the things we did in each town we stayed in was to find the playground for the girls.  They just loved being outside all day.  Jacqueline is now able to do the monkey bars on her own and Karen can do them going every other one.  They are both very proud of themselves.

Around the third day, we drove up to Franz Josef to the glaciers.  We didn't get the guided walks that you can take and actually walk on the glaciers, but we did get close enough for a good view.  The Franz Josef glacier is pictured here in the distance.  We were able to get closer to Fox Glacier.  Karen and George almost got close enough to touch it.  I headed back with Jacqueline and Meghan earlier.

On the fourth day, we drove down to a town called Wanaka.  We really enjoyed our stay here.  We visited Puzzling World and had a blast!

When you first entered the place, it was like a cafe and it had different types of puzzles at each table. There was a room full of holograms that was really cool.  They also had a room full of faces that looked like they were following you.  It was the neatest thing!  Look carefully at the picture below.  Notice Karen is actually bigger than George!

Next, we went into the room of illusions.  It was difficult to gain perspective as to how you were standing.  There was a pool table that if you set a ball at one end, it appeared to roll up the table.  There was also a water pipe that had water flowing in an upward direction.
From here, we went out to the maze.  We probably spent at least two hours trying to find the four corners and then find our way out.  It was a lot of fun.

From Wanaka, we drove to Queenstown for one night.  We took a steamboat ride to a farm and were able to see how they have the dogs round up the sheep.  We also watched them shear a sheep.  The girls were able to feed sheep, deer and cattle.  On the boat ride back, a guy played the piano for a sing-a-long.  The girls really enjoyed that.  After Queenstown, we drove to a place called Te Anau.

From Te Anau, we drove two hours to take a boat cruise through Milford Sound.  It was beautiful.  It was a little overcast that day-but the rain held off.  I was hoping it would rain a little because that makes the waterfalls even more spectacular.  The boat went right up to the waterfalls.  The girls loved that.  Meghan really enjoyed the ride.  We drove back to Te Anau and spent the night.  The next morning we headed back to Queenstown and from there, flew back to Christ Church.  We spent our last full day walking around the town and playing at the playground in the Botanic Gardens.  It was a fantastic vacation.
